The Smell of Rain

More specifically the smell and feel of warm summer rain. Physiologically I don't know how it works (and amazingly I don't even care) but something about the smell and feel brings back pleasant memories, words to songs (particularly this song)and overcomes my whole being with comfort.

On Tuesday, on top of being incredibly happy because my life was validated, my friend Star, who is from Safford, stopped by to give me some t-shirts and when I opened the door I could feel the warm rain, see the sky light up and I just took a deep breath in and basked in the thought of Arizona monsoons. I think it was the most lightening I had ever seen in Provo, I don't remember it raining here at all last summer. We stood outside together just reminiscing of how great our hometown summer rains were and discussed our longing to move back(although we both agreed it couldn't happen until after we had a ring on our finger because our towns weren't likely to provide us with that opportunity). Then yesterday after my softball game we were talking with another girl from Arizona about the rain and how much we enjoyed it, that's when I decided our summer rains is one of the reasons why us Arizonans think so highly of our state(my roommates often harass me because I have a state ego like Texans or Californians, and they don't think I have a reason to, but they think Idaho is the best state ever).

However there is a rather biting consequence to these lovely summer rains and that is nasty mosquitoes. In my book they rank up there with Rasputin, Cruela De Vil, Lord Voldemort(7 more days), Lex Luther, Darth Vader, University Parking, and The Grant Building(Testing Center) on my list of villains. After softball I practiced throwing and receiving with some of the girls on my football team, and we were eaten alive, I'm pretty sure i have like 20 mosquito bites on my body and it's not fun. Thankfully tonight's football game is on AstroTurf, which hurts a lot more when you slide, but it doesn't hide as many of those nasty bugs.

Today's lesson, I need to look for the positive more often, last week I was complaining that we had to play on AstroTurf and today I'm thankful. So even though I have a ton of mosquito bites I should be thankful I'm Type O, and even if one of those mosquitoes was carrying malaria I'm not likely to get it(see article for reason why) and I could easily go to the store and buy Off, which I should probably do.
