Dr. Benjamin Carson came and spoke at BYU's forum this week and I was really excited. I have this love for pediatric neurosurgeons and Dr. Carson is one of the best. I've read his biography Gifted Hands and it is phenomenal, he is incredibly smart and talented but has an admirable faith in God, which keeps him humble. I highly recommend the book, but I am kind of a biography junkie, I think the are the best books to learn from. His speech was entitled
America The Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great which is the title of his most recent book. He made some great points, like how we can name 5 NBA/NFL/MLB players, we can name 5 musicians/actors/reality stars but we can't name 5 Nobel Prize winners. Another sad part of our nation he pointed out was that people put more time into choosing a car to buy than what representative to put into office. He also said that Political Correctness is an insidious
erosion of our values and we shouldn't be worried about offending others with everyday things we say because we shouldn't be taking offense. Most of all he said we need to be kind, whether it is talking on the elevator instead of staring at the moving numbers like we've never seen them before or opening a door for someone.
I got there early and stayed for the Q&A (which made me miss class) but it was worth it, and I met two new people.
I have to make a note about food for this to be my blog (and because I'm beginning to think that it is my gift), last weekend I made
S'mores Cookies for Star's birthday (it was her requested treat) and my next treat is an Ice Cream Cake I will of course let you know how it turns out.
I've got those cookies pinned. We were going to make them while Lori was in town...but it didn't happen. How are they? I'd still like to try them.
ReplyDeleteI personally really liked them, but I really like s'mores. I thought they had a great texture and the cookie dough tasted really good. I got distracted and didn't smush them down soon enough, so I would make sure to set a timer. I also only made used one 11x17 cookie sheet so that the cookies would be thicker, and I thought they were a good thickness.
