This year I volunteered to be the Volunteer coordinator for Freedom Days, which requires me to find about 100 people to come help with a children's art yard and a large group of vendors so that about 100,000 people from Utah Valley can have something to do on their holiday over a 3 day span. One problem I STINK at asking people for help, my visiting teacher had to practically beg me to let her make me cookie dough. Luckily I had 2 zones of missionaries come to my rescue but still for the past 2 days I've put in 14+ hour days of volunteering which I took time off and my holiday to do for very little appreciation, mostly people just get upset because we don't do more. Apparently I'm preparing for being a Young Women's leader and having to go to camp with crazy teenage girls. Yesterday (the 4th) after arriving at Freedom Days at 7:45am to help by the time 10pm came around and we closed James and I were tired and headed home for bed before the fireworks. . As we were getting ready for bed the fireworks went off and of course I had to watch some from my bedroom window. If we measured a straight shot we live about a half a mile from where they shoot off the fireworks, which is much further than where I usually watch the fireworks in comparison to where they launch them. I was surprised at just a half a mile the difference between the speed of light vs. the speed of sound, and all I could think of after that was this beauty I got in the general freedom festival email last year after Stadium of Fire when I was working as an intern. Last year I thought it was a joke but after doing a little people watching as I volunteered this year and running into some strange people (and a girl that thought it was fashionable to wear only a scarf for a shirt) I'm not so sure is wasn't someone who wrote it in all seriousness. I took out the name of the author and added a note for clarification to people who don't know Provo but left everything else in it's original form. Enjoy!
Hello there!
I am a long time resident of Utah Valley and annual enjoyer of the Freedom Festival festivities.
I love the 4th of July and appreciate all the hard work you put into creating spectacular events to celebrate our great nation. My favorite event (and I know many would agree with me) is the big fireworks show you put on in the stadium of fire. You can understand my concern then with the sound problems me and my friends encountered during this years show.
You see, this year my friends and I decided to enjoy the show farther away then we usually do, specifically in the parking lot near Movies 8 in Provo [editor's note: this location is about a mile from where the launch the fireworks]. After waiting in anticipation for the show to start, I felt a rush of excitement as the first firework launched in a stream of light. The light went up and up and we all tensed waiting for the BOOM of the firework to go off, the firework exploded in a shower of light and color and.... nothing. No sound, no boom. In confusion we waited for a good 3-4 seconds until we finally heard the boom associated with the fireworks explosion. Hoping that first firework was a fluke or dummy, we waited for the rest of the fireworks to launch. However, we were sorely disappointed when we discovered that not only that first firework, but all the proceeding fireworks had the sound delay issue. I'm sorry to say we left that night confused and dissappointed in this years fireworks show.
As I said before, I appreciate all of the hard work all of you put into this show. Now I'm no expert and I understand what a large task that is and how many technical aspects must be covered in order for everything to run smoothly. But please, from one humble American to another, before you rush off in preparation for next years celebrations I would ask if you could look into this firework error. I know you care about America as much as I do and will put great effort into fixing this glaring issue.
I will leave it up to your professional discretion on how to best solve this problem, whether it involves speeding up the sound or slowing down the light I'm not sure, like I said I'm no expert. But if I can help in any way let me know, feel free to contact me. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

**Just one last soap box comment, people please understand the definition of volunteer and when you say you will volunteer do not ask what I will give you for it, and look at me as if a t-shirt, food and water plus the joy of helping others isn't enough**
Can't believe how "stupid" some people are.
