This weekend was the Mountain West Conference golf championship and it was being held in Tucson, so since I stopped in Tucson to see Bethany this weekend, we decided to go. She wanted to show me golf wasn't as bad as I thought, I wanted to have her appreciate BYU sports (both of which we achieved)... and there was a guy I sat next to in my political science class first semester on the golf team. So yesterday we went and watched about an hour and a half of golf which i thought would be enough for me, but I realized it's a great way to get vitamin D and kinda interesting to watch, so I decided to return today. When we were watching yesterday no one said a word to us the entire time, but we learned today that they did take notice. This morning we got to the course to see 4 of the 5 BYU players tee off and stayed for all 18 holes. We learned quickly that usually NO ONE watches college golf, besides the players family. Unlike yesterday, today while we were watching the BYU coach and the athletic trainer came up to us at different times and asked us why we were so devoted that we were there watching for a second day, so we talked to them for a little bit. I found it intriguing to watch the concentration of the players that go into every drive or putt, you can see them devising a plan to get the ball in the hole.
Esteban (the guy from my political science class)played an awesome game today (especially on the back 9) hitting -6 there and -2 overall for the day. As a team BYU placed 4th in the championship led by Esteban and another BYU team member who were in a 5 way tie for 7th individually.
Other news in our golf adventure. While we were talking to the athletic trainer we learned he was also the athletic trainer for men's basketball, so of course Jimmer came up (especially since today is the day he had to pull his name out of the draft). We learned from him a NBA team was looking at him as a possible first round pick and we discussed the situation a little further. Just in case you are wondering Jimmer took his name out and will be returning next year. Yay!
The final news of the day...Bethany and I are really really RIDICULOUSLY good looking...ok, that's not it but we are a little ridiculous. The tournament was played at OMNI Tucson National; yesterday we had difficulty finding it and even had to call Bethany's roommate for directions but today as we were leaving we passed an intersection at shannon and magee which looked REALLY familiar and we realized we were at the golf course our grandparents used to live on. Both times we were there we only skipped one hole which was #16 because yesterday we had to leave on hole #15 so Bethany could go take a final and then today we went to #18 to watch all of the BYU players on their last hole. Turns out #16 is the hole by our grandparents old house. We had to drive past it just to make sure our memory was correct and it sure was.
Here is their old house
and here is me on the golf course and you can't see it but there is a MWC flag for the 16th hole right next to the tree by my shoulder
