Since the time I fell in love with basketball I have always been an Arizona Wildcat fan, I gave my heart to that team. Rejoiced when they won and possibly shed a few tears (or at least had a depressed mood) when they lost. When Jerryd Bayless left for the NBA after his freshman year, I was heartbroken. My goal for college was to go to UofA and get an education but more than anything I was looking forward to going to their basketball games. So the day I decided I was moving to Provo, brought on some basketball depression. Cougar country is full of devoted football fans but their devotion didn't really extend to basketball. Being the avid college basketball fan that I am, I went to the Blue and White Scrimmage and I swear I was pretty much the only one there. So I came home and knew something had to change. I continued to go to the games because maybe my devotion would rub off, but I was let down over and over by the lack of enthusiasm and commitment of the crowd, even when BYU was winning their games. Then something great happened, they continued to win, people started to notice them, and I was starting to love a new team. My only problem with this was BYU was scheduled to play at Arizona and I was torn between who to cheer for. The day of the game I decided I would stand behind BYU, I was after all a Cougar if you looked at my student card. It turned out to be a good choice seeing as Jimmer decided to score 49 points in the McKale Center. After the emotional struggle of seeing my former love trampled on by my new fling I was able to work out my feelings and become committed to BYU. The basketball fan base increased and they even sold out the Marriott Center twice in the season which is not an easy thing to do. It was great to be a Cougar during March Madness as Jimmer and Michael Loyd finally led us into second round, and I am looking forward to the end of October for it to start again.
However when it came to NBA basketball my team did not change in the least, as I basked in the joy of the Suns beating the Jazz to determine playoff seeding. GO SUNS!
